Destational Diabetes Diet Plan

Gestational diabetes

What is it? Gestational diabetes is when your blood sugar (glucose) is too high while you are pregnant. Gestational diabetes often goes away after the baby is born. But, you may get diabetes later if you have diabetes during pregnancy.

In diabetes, your body does not make enough insulin or the insulin it makes does not work right. This causes your blood sugar levels to be too high. This can be harmful to you and your unborn child. Controlling your blood sugar is important for the health of your unborn baby.

The carbohydrates in your food become glucose in your body. Glucose is a major energy source for your body. Carbohydrates come from starchy foods such as breads, pasta, potatoes, rice, and other grains. Carbohydrates are also found in fruits, dairy foods, vegetables, sugar, and sweets.

You need to eat the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, and fat while you are pregnant. This requires more planning if you are taking insulin to control your blood sugar while you are pregnant.

What is carbohydrate counting? Carbohydrate counting means keeping track of the amount of carbohydrates you eat every day. You should eat the same amount of carbohydrates at the same times each day. This will help keep your blood sugar within the normal range.

One serving of a carbohydrate food contains 12 to 15 grams of carbohydrate. A serving is equal to one of the portions listed below. You can exchange or trade one carbohydrate food for another from the same food group. For example, you can choose 1 slice of bread instead of 1/2 cup cooked cereal.

Vegetables contain only 5 grams of carbohydrate per serving. Do not count vegetables as carbohydrates unless you eat more than 2 servings per meal. Meat, meat substitutes, and fats are not counted as carbohydrates.

Calorie Intake:

Most pregnant women need about 300 extra calories per day in the second and third trimesters to gain enough weight. This equals about 16 to 17 calories per pound of ideal body weight.

An extra 10 to 12 grams of protein per day is also needed to help your baby grow normally. It is also helpful to get 45 to 60% of your calories from carbohydrates, 15 to 25% from protein, and 20 to 30% from fat.

Eating Plans:

Your dietitian will show you how to meet the guidelines above. You may use the sample menu below or the Diabetes Meal Planning Guide to do this. Ask for the CareNotes?handout about the diabetic exchange diet to find the serving sizes of foods not on the lists below.

Some people with gestational diabetes can control their blood sugar with diet alone. They do this by eating 3 meals and 1 to 3 snacks each day.

You will need a snack at bedtime to prevent your blood sugar levels from being too low overnight. Your dietitian will tell you if you need snacks in the morning or afternoon.

Eat at the same times each day, whenever possible, and never skip meals or snacks. Spread your food out evenly over the day so that you eat about every 2 to 3 hours. Eat only the amount that is on the food list. Or the amount your dietitian tells you to eat for each type of carbohydrate food.

Avoid foods and beverages with added sugar, corn syrup, honey, molasses, or maple syrup, or jams and jellies.

Read the labels of packaged foods to find the grams of carbohydrate a serving has in it.

Other Factors:

Choosing high fiber foods will help control your blood sugar and have regular bowel movements. High fiber foods are fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, cooked dried beans, and bran cereals.

Check with your doctor before exercising during pregnancy. Tell your dietitian about your exercise plan so your diet can be changed if needed. You may need extra carbohydrates before exercise to keep your blood sugar from dropping too low.

Talk with your caregiver if your blood sugar levels are too low or too high. Make sure your cholesterol and other blood lipids (fats) are checked at least once a year. You may need to follow a lowfat diet if they are too high.

Serving Sizes: Use the list below to measure foods and serving sizes. A serving size means the size of food after it is cooked or prepared.

1 pint or 2 cups (16 fluid ounces) of liquid is the size of 1-1/3 soda-pop cans.

1-1/2 cup (12 fluid ounces) of liquid is the size of a soda-pop can.

1 cup of food is the size of a large handful, or 8 fluid ounces of liquid.

?cup of food is about half of a large handful, or 4 fluid ounces of liquid.

2 tablespoons (Tbsp) is about the size of a large walnut.

1 tablespoon (Tbsp) is about the size of the tip of your thumb (from the last crease).

1 teaspoon (tsp) is about the size of the tip of your little finger (from the last crease).

3 ounces of cooked meat, fish, or poultry is about the size of a deck of cards.

1 ounce of cooked meat, fish, or poultry is about ?cup.

One ounce of hard cheese is about a 1 inch cube.

A serving of vegetables is ?cup (1/2 handful) cooked, or 1 cup (1 handful) raw.

CARBOHYDRATE FOODS AND SERVING SIZES

Breads and Starches: Each serving contains 15 grams carbohydrate. Eat ____ servings per day from this list. Most people need 6-10 servings per day.

1 slice bread (1 ounce)

1/2cup cooked pasta, corn, cooked cereal, mashed potato, or green peas

1/3 cup cooked rice, dried beans, or dried peas

3/4 cup flake cereal

1/2 hamburger or hot dog bun, English muffin, or frozen bagel

3 cups air-popped popcorn

1 small (3 inch) potato

2 rice cakes

6 saltines or three (2-1/2 inch squares) graham crackers

Treat Low Blood Sugar

Getting more exercise than usual
Drinking alcohol without eating food
Certain symptoms will warn you that your blood sugar is getting dangerously low. Be on the lookout for:

Weakness
Feeling tired
Shaking
Sweating
Headache
Hunger
Nervousness or anxiety
Feeling irritable


What to do

If any of these symptoms occur and you have a blood sugar test kit available, check your blood sugar. (See Step 5: Monitor Your Blood Sugar.) If the level is low (70mg/dl), you need to treat your low blood sugar right away. Eat one of the following sugar-containing foods, which will provide you with about 15 grams of carbohydrate:

3 glucose tablets
Half cup (4 ounces) of fruit juice or regular soda
6 or 7 hard candies
1 tablespoon of sugar
Wait about 15 minutes for the sugar to get into your blood. This wait can be hard because of the uncomfortable symptoms you are feeling, but if you eat too much sugar, you will make your blood sugar go too high.

If you don't feel better in 15 minutes:

Eat something with sugar in it again.
Check your blood sugar. If it has come into a safer range (over 70mg/dl), and your meal is more than an hour away, eat a snack that contains carbohydrate and protein. Examples include either cheese and crackers or a glass of milk.
This combination of steps will almost always bring your blood sugar into the safe range. If it doesn't work, call your doctor right away.

In summary

This method of treating low blood sugars is called the 15:15 rule. Eat 15 grams of carbohydrate and wait 15 minutes.


Remember: Use simple sugar first to get the situation under control. Eating candy with a lot of fat (like chocolate) might seem like a good idea, but it won't bring your blood sugar up fast enough.

People with diabetes should wear or carry I.D. information that emergency medical staff can find. If you are on medication that can cause hypoglycemia, always carry a sugar-containing snack like glucose tablets, lifesavers, or raisins.

Vegetarian Diet Helps You Beat Diabetes

The diabetic vegetarian diet provides tremendous benefits. Whether you have diabetes or not, this is true.There is a wealth of evidence from science that backs this up. Even so, the virtues of this diet go contrary to popular belief.
I have to sing the praises of this "anti-diabetes diet", which I see as very similar to a total vegetarian diet.

If you don't like vegetarian food and you are a diabetic or are pre-disposed to having the disease, don't go anywhere yet! Hold on to your chair.This will shock you, and with your permission, turn your life around just like it did mine... and I'm loving it too!

What is this vegetarian diet for diabetics?


The diabetic vegetarian diet that I advocate is totally vegetarian (or vegan) and is quite simple. I live on it, and have postprandial blood sugar readings within the normal range (80 - 120 mg/dL).Basically, it is a high fiber carbohydrate, low fat diet. A diet high in fiber and low in fat will get most diabetics off medication and injections in a matter of weeks.

Here is a direct quote from two leading doctors who are respected authorities in the study and treatment of lifestyle-related illnesses.Several studies prove that dietary fat and body fat are the chief culprits in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or Type 2 (also called adult-onset diabetes).

It has been suggested that diabetics on this dietary plan use no more than 3 servings of fresh whole fruits per day. Avoid canned fruit, which often have sugar added.The diabetic vegetarian diet calls for free use of whole-grain products, tubers and legumes, salads and vegetables.

Equally as important also, is how you eat these foods...

Eat your largest meal at breakfast and your smallest (a snack) at dinner/supper time. I have proven the merits of this plan. And just thinking of it, it makes more sense than what most people practice.

...the diabetic vegetarian diet goes hand in hand with regular exercise; such as walking for 1/2 hour to 1 hour every morning.What if you can't walk OR say, you don't love the outdoors?

No problem... just exercise indoors. Even sit-and-be-fit exercise. I've done it in the winter months, and it works. Anything to get the heart rate up.
This goes hand-in-hand with a good exercise program ESPECIALLY if you need to lose weight.

There is no diet plan or diet program that will heal or cure diabetes on it's own. None.All health principles and habits that promote a healthy lifestyle must be obeyed and practiced together. This includes

Keep Awareness Of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas.  Scientists believe that genetic factors as well as environmental triggers are involved in causing T1D.

About 346 million people worldwide have diabetes.  Only about 5-10% of them have Type 1 Diabetes, but that is still 17-35 million people.  Type 1 Diabetes can not be reversed or cured, there is no way to prevent it, it is not caused by eating too much sugar, diet, or exercise.  People with Type 1 Diabetes need to take insulin injections everyday or need to use an insulin pump.  Type 1 Diabetes used to be known as Juvenile Diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes.  It is now only called Type 1 Diabetes because adults can be diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and sometimes people with Type 2 Diabetes take insulin.  Type 1 Diabetes needs constant attention.  Insulin is not a cure.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes:
  • Sudden Onset
  • 5-10% of all cases
  • Requires Insulin Injections or Insulin Pump
  • Pancreas makes little or no insulin (after the honeymoon phase)
  • Low level of C-peptide
  • Can not be prevented
  • Can not be controlled through diet & exercise alone
  • Autoimmune disease (the body's own immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells)
Type 2 Diabetes :
  • Gradual Onset
  • 90-95% of all cases
  • Possible Insulin Injections, Insulin Pump, or oral medications
  • Pancreas does make insulin, someone with T2 has insulin resistance
  • Normal or high level of C-peptide
  • Can possibly be prevented in some people
  • Can possibly be controlled (not cured) through diet & exercise
  • Non Autoimmune disease (T2D is caused by insulin resistance)
The honeymoon phase refers to the period of time shortly after type 1 diabetes has been diagnosed where the pancreas is still producing insulin.  This period is only temporary and varies from person to person and can last for weeks, months, or up to a year.  It is rare to last longer than 1 year.

Some people with Type 2 Diabetes may take insulin but that does not mean their Type 2 Diabetes turned into Type 1 Diabetes. The type of diabetes someone has is defined by what caused it, not how it is treated.

Signs & symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes can come on quickly can come on quickly and may include..

  • Frequent urination 
  • Increased thirst
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Fruity smelling breath
  • Increased appetite
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Heavy, labored breathing
