Is It Possible To Reverse Diabetes?

You may have wondered if it was possible to reverse diabetes. Or you may have heard about others being able to reverse diabetes. Before we get into the discussion of how to reverse diabetes we should know the different types of diabetes. Because unfortunately it is not possible to reverse all types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is not able to be reversed, it is a lifelong chronic illness usually diagnosed at childhood. Because in type 1 diabetes the body completely kills off insulin producing cells in the pancreas, which makes the body unable to make its own insulin. This is why all type 1 diabetics must rely on insulin injections to stay alive. The bottom line is there is no way to reverse diabetes in those who are Type 1. The only chance is for a cure.

With type 2 diabetes however it is possible to reverse the affects for the most part through diet and exercise. If you are overweight and have type 2 diabetes, you may be able to get better insulin producing function by just losing weight. Diet and exercise is not a miracle cure for type 2 diabetes but it is important in maintaining diabetes. Make sure to watch what you eat if you are trying to reverse diabetes.

The following tips have proven useful to others in this process:

  • Try to avoid starchy vegetables like peas, corn and carrots
  • Get the majority of your protein from poultry instead of red meat
  • Eat oily fish two times a week.
  • Eat breads with a lot of fiber.
  • Read nutritional labels
Eating the right foods is very important but it is also important to eat the right amount. Those with diabetes who are overweight should try cutting calories first to lose a few pounds. By decreasing your weight you will notice that your diabetes will improve greatly.  Another key part of how to reverse diabetes is exercise. Exercise is very important because it helps to lower blood sugar levels as well as tone muscle and lose weight. With exercise it’s a win-win situation.
Try the following to get started on an exercise routine:

  • 10 minutes of stretching
  • 10 minutes of walking in the middle of the day
  • 10 minutes of dumbbells later at night

If you are unable to do cardiovascular activities try starting with strength training. It is important that whatever exercise routine you decide on to reverse diabetes be one that you can stick with. You know your limits and must not over push them or all your efforts will be for nothing.

Remember to talk with your doctor and diabetic team before starting any new diet or exercise program. They are your best friends in the journey to reverse diabetes and should be informed of any changes.  Together with your health care team you can decide which plan is best for you and which will work the best. It is possible to reverse diabetes to lead a more healthy life. But keep in mind that even though you can reverse diabetes that does not give you a free ticket to do and eat whatever you like. You should keep a healthy diet and exercise routine even after you reverse diabetes.
